Sudanese doctor wins international accolade of over 1 million dollars

Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - The Sudan Doctors Network has sent a sympathetic congratulation to  Dr. Jamal Al-Tayeb, Director of Al-Naw Hospital, on receiving the  Aurora Prize for Humanity 2025, saying it was “ a truly well-deserved honor”.

Dr. Tayeb  refused to leave the hospital during months of shelling and drone attack in Omdurman. It remained one of the handful hospitals in Khartoum, which was abandoned by the government at the time and it was the only referral hospital for quite sometime since the outbreak of the war in Khartoum state.

In a statement it issued on Saturday , the Sudan Doctors Network extended its warmest congratulations to humanitarian physician Dr. Tayeb, Director of Al-Naw Hospital, on his well-earned recognition with the Aurora Prize for Humanity 2025.

“This award honors his heroic role and unwavering dedication to humanitarian service during the Khartoum tragedy and the subsequent challenges faced by Sudan’s health sector,” the network stressed.

It added that this international recognition highlights the extraordinary efforts of Dr. Tayeb and his colleagues at Al-Naw Hospital, who remained steadfast in their humanitarian and medical duties during the most difficult times—braving shortages of supplies and insecurity—while embodying the highest ideals of courage and selflessness in service to others.

The Sudan Doctors Network affirms that this achievement stands as a tribute to all doctors and healthcare workers in Sudan who continued their mission amid bombardment and hardship. They have been, and continue to be, a pillar of support for society and the living conscience of the nation.

“In conclusion, the Network reiterates its pride in this recognition, which reaffirms the enduring values of generosity, compassion, and humanity for which Sudanese doctors have always been known,” the statement said.

The  Aurora Humanitarian Initiative announced Thursday evening that Dr. Tayeb  has been named the 2025 Aurora Prize Laureate. The $1 million Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity honors individuals who risk their lives to save others.

A statement by the organisation stated last week that this  year, Aurora recognizes Dr. Tayeb's extraordinary courage and steadfast dedication to providing care for those trapped in conflict.
