Sudanese central bank issues new 2000 Sudanese pound banknote

Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - The Central Bank of Sudan (CBS) has announced it is issuing a new 2000 Sudanese pound banknote. The current biggest banknote is 1000 pounds.

A statement released by the Bank spelt out the specifications, colours, security features, dimensions, content, primary colours, and watermark of the new denomination.

It did not say why the new banknote is being issued at this time.

However, it is known that inflation is at its highest at present while the purchasing power of the pound is dwindling. The IMF says inflation is about 87.2%. The smallest banknote currently in circulation is the 100 Sudanese pounds, but its purchasing power is very low, barely securing a piece of medium quality candy or chewing gum. A kilo of mutton, fetches over 32,000 pounds.

The impact of the war is clearly felt in the market and foreign exchange offices where one dollar equals a whopping 35,000 pounds and more in the black market.

The Central Bank of Sudan previously issued a second edition of the 500 Sudanese pound banknote. The current banknotes in circulation are 100, 200, 500 and 1000 pounds.
