Sudanese and Eritrean leaders vow closer ties amid regional tensions

Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - Sudan’s Sovereign Council head General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki agreed on Saturday to strengthen security and economic cooperation, cementing a strategic alliance amid growing instability in the Horn of Africa.

President Afwerki’s visit to Port Sudan—his first since the 2019 ouster of Omar al-Bashir—comes amid heightened tensions over Ethiopia’s stated desire to gain access to the Red Sea coast, a move that has unnerved its neighbours, Sudanese news outlet, Sudan Tribune reported.

The publication said Eritrea has also emerged as a key ally of the Sudanese army in the civil war against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), providing political backing to Khartoum and serving as a training ground for allied armed groups.

It quoted a statement from the Sovereign Council that said the leaders discussed “activating joint cooperation” and reviewed regional developments.

Burhan praised Asmara’s support for Sudan’s sovereignty and described bilateral ties as “strategic”.

President Afwerki affirmed his support for Sudan’s unity and rejected “external interventions”, emphasising the need for regional cooperation to resolve core issues, the statement added.
