Sudanese and Chadian leaders underline need for cooperation against terrorism threats

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - Sudan and Chad on Sunday engaged in bilateral talks at the level of the heads of transitional councils in both countries, to seek further cooperation and coordination between the two countries during the coming period.

A statement by the Sudanese Sovereign Council, said the Sudanese president of the council, Lt.-Gen. Abdul Fatah Al Burhan, received the Head of the Chadian Transitional Council, Gen. Mahamat Idris Debby Itno, in Khartoum and both men agreed on the need for consolidating cooperation and coordination on regional issues of mutual interest.

“We have launched tremendous work that we have to further develop,” the official media quoted the Sudanese official as saying during the meeting.

Burhan was quoted as adding that it was vital for the two countries to cooperate in the political, security and economic domains as well as in community development.

He said it was also imperative for the two sides to further coordinate and work together in staving off challenges related to “terrorism and extremist groups”.

He said this would mean reinvigorating the security cooperation agreement signed in Ndjamena between the Sudan, Chad, Libya and Niger in 2018, for securing their joint borders.

The Chadian official has meanwhile said his country and the Sudan have the political will and determination to face these challenges and to remedy the questions they face.

“Our country is in a transitional period and we hope the Sudan would assist us in this regard as it is a neighboring country and a friend.”

He also underlined the need to integrate efforts and cooperation with the African Union in the area of securing joint borders, combating terrorism and unruly movements along the borderlines.

A session of joint Sudanese-Chadian official talks started on Sunday in Khartoum, co-chaired by Al-Burhan and Debby Itno.

The President of the Chadian Transitional Military Council and the accompanying delegation are in Khartoum on a two-day official.
