Sudan welcomes UN Security Council's rejection of plan by paramilitary group to establish rival govt in the west

Port Sudan, Sudan (PANA) - Sudan has welcomed the UN Security Council's rejection of the announcement by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to establish a parallel government in areas it controls in the west.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation published by the official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) on Thursday said the Security Council recalled its Resolution 2736 (2024), in which it called on RSF to lift the siege on El-Fashir and cease fighting, and allow unhindered access for humanitarian aid.

The Sudanese government also praised the rationale of the UN Security Council statement, which unequivocally condemned and rejected the actions of RSF militia.

The government noted previous similar statements issued by regional and international organisations, the UN Secretary-General, friendly countries, and other parties, which reflect the international consensus rejecting the RSF and its political alliance.

The Sudanese government reiterated its firm commitment to preserving the country's safety, security, stability, unity, and sovereignty over the country, and affirmed its readiness to work with the international community in accordance with the principles and laws that serve the interests of the Sudanese people.

The UN Security Council, in rejecting the RSF's declaration last month of a rival administration in parts of Sudan it controls, warned that the move threatens the country's unity and risks worsening the brutal conflict between the militia and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

Council members said the step posed "a direct threat to Sudan's territorial integrity" and could fragment the country, fuel the fighting, and deepen an already dire humanitarian crisis.
