Sudan suspends Al Arabiya bureau chief over ‘professional transgressions'

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - Sudan on Friday suspended the bureau chief for Al Arabiya and Al Hadath television, Lina Yagoub, and revoked her credentials, accusing her of professional misconduct that risked national security.

A Sudanese media outlet, Sudan Tribune, quoted the Ministry of Information as saying in a statement that the decision followed “major and repeated professional transgressions”, alleging Yagoub broadcast unverified information and published reports from anonymous sources without consulting official bodies.

It said the government claimed her reporting included “false information”, such as a claim that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had seized army headquarters, and sensitive military details attributed to unconfirmed sources. The ministry said her work had “misled” the public and contributed to civilian displacement.

In a reaction, the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate immediately rejected the move, calling it a “serious setback for press freedom” and demanding the decision be reversed.

The syndicate argued that the ministry failed to provide concrete evidence for its claims and was setting a “worrying precedent” of using vague terms like “national security” to silence independent journalism. It warned the decision fuels a “hostile environment” for reporters in the country.

The ministry clarified that the suspension targets Yagoub directly and not the two media channels, which remain licensed to operate in Sudan.
