Sudan says it has 'thwarted an incursion attempt' by Ethiopian soldiers

Khartoum, Sept. 26 (SUNA) - Sudan announced on Sunday that its soldiers have "thwarted an incursion attempt" by Ethiopian soldiers.

The official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) quoted Brigadier Al-Tahir Abuhaja, Media Adviser to the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan Armed Forces, as saying in press statement that "the Sudanese Armed Forces had confronted the incursion attempt and compelled the Ethiopian forces to withdraw".

SUNA said the incursion attempt by the Ethiopian forces was at Umm Barakit sector in Al-Fashqa area.

Tension has been rising between Sudan and Ethiopia for many months now following the crisis in Ethiopia after Federal Government of Ethiopian began military action against the Tigray regional government which led to an influx of refugees into Sudan.

Ethiopia is yet to react to the statement by the Sudanese Armed Forces.

In December last year, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed  said his government was following a cross-border incident with Sudan in which a number of Sudanese soldiers died.

The Sudanese Armed Forces said the cross-border attack by the Ethiopian military and militia happened as its soldiers were returning from an operation in the al-Qadarif province along the Ethiopian border.

The two countries are also bitterly divided over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) being constructed on the Blue Nile by Ethiopia. The disagreements over the GERD pits Sudan and Egypt against Ethiopia.
