Sudan medical group, UN report massive displacement from Bara, rights violations

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - The Sudan Doctors Network (SDN) said on Friday that 4,500 people have been displaced from the town of Bara in North Kordofan due to deteriorating security and continued violations by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against civilians.

The RSF recaptured Bara, located about 35 kilometres northeast of El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, last Saturday. This follows more than a month of Sudanese army control over the town, Sudan news outlet, Sudan Tribune reported.

It said the Sudan Doctors Network confirmed that the RSF caused the displacement of more than 4,500 citizens from Bara. About 1,900 of them have arrived in El Obeid, while the rest are still en route amid harsh conditions and severe shortages of food, water, and shelter.

In a statement, the medical group affirmed that North Kordofan state is witnessing an accelerating wave of displacement from Bara locality towards El Obeid due to the deteriorating security situation and ongoing RSF violations against civilians.

Field reports from the SDN teams indicate that the majority of displaced families arrived in a state of severe exhaustion. Multiple cases of diarrhea and malnutrition have been recorded, especially among children and the elderly.

The network’s statement reported that health facilities in El Obeid are facing increasing pressure exceeding their operational capacity due to significant shortages of medicines, medical supplies, and staff.

The statement condemned the forced displacement operations against unarmed civilians by the RSF in Bara and expressed the doctors' grave concern over the worsening humanitarian situation.

The network called on humanitarian organisations and local authorities to intervene urgently to provide basic needs for the displaced.

It also appealed to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and health sector partners to support the medical facilities in El Obeid, stressing that the continuation of this displacement warns of a new humanitarian crisis unless immediate action is taken to remedy the situation, according to the statement.

In a related development, the UN secretary general spokesperson stated that the humanitarian situation in North Kordofan State also remains alarming, with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) estimating that close to 36,000 people have been displaced from Bara town, north of the state capital El Obeid, all within the past week.

Sudan Tribune said reports are also emerging of serious violations in the context of the RSF capture of Bara town in North Kordofan, including the alleged summary execution of five Red Crescent volunteers. UN human rights colleagues have also received alarming reports of sexual violence, it added.
