Sudan: US charge d'affaires in Khartoum visits North Darfur State

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - The Charge d'Affaires of the United States of America in Khartoum, Steven Koutsis, has concluded a four-day visit to North Darfur State where he had a series of meetings with government officials and peacekeepers.

He met with the Deputy Governor, the State's security committee, traditional administration leaders, the Darfur crimes prosecutor general and UN peacekeeping (UNAMID) officials.

The Sudan News Agency (SUNA) said Koutsis had a closed-door meeting on Tuesday with Deputy Governor Mohamed Biraimah.

The agency quoted the Deputy Governor as saying that he discussed with the Charge d'Affaires issues of common concern with emphasis on facilitation of movement by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to guarantee access for delivery of humanitarian aid to needy populations in the State.

According to SUNA Biraimah told Koutsis that his State would not object to facilitating NGOs' movements on a number of conditions connected with guaranteeing protection and safety to those organizations.

He added that his State's government is committed to provision of assistance to help the NGOs discharge their missions.

The Deputy Governor, according to SUNA, said the US Charge d'Affaires acknowledged the improvement of the security situation in Darfur and pledged cooperation and provision of further support to the State.
