Sudan: Three policemen killed, two wounded by unidentified gunmen in North Darfur

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - Three policemen have been shot dead and two others wounded on Thursday in the first attack of its kind in many months by unidentified gunmen at a checkpoint on a highway in North Darfur State, west Sudan.

Khartoum daily newspapers reported on Friday that the armed men arrived at dawn at the customs post, 22 km from Al-Fashir, capital of the State and seat of the UN-AU peace keeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID), and quested some water to perform ablution and prepare themselves for dawn prayer.

The group suddenly fired a volley of bullets on the police, killing three and wounding two others before running away, the reports said.

North Darfur State Governor Abdul Wahid Yusuf and members of the State Security Committee arrived on the scene and made arrangements to send the wounded to hospital and pursuing the culprits, the papers said.
