Sudan: Sudan to mark full implementation of DDPD

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - President Idris Debby of Chad will visit the Sudan shortly to take part in celebrations marking the full implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD), concluded in July 2011 under Qatari, UN, AU and Arab league supervision as the framework for peace in the restive region of Darfur.

The planned visit follows a message from the Sudanese President President Omar Bashir, inviting Debby to attend the event which will take place on 20 July, 2016, according to the Sudanese independent daily, Al Mighar al siassi (Arabic for Political microscope).

The daily said the celebrations which will be held in Fashir, capital of North Darfur State, are also to be attended by the Qatari Emir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad.

Qatar is one of the main political and economic backers of Sudan’s Islamist government and hosted the Darfur peace talks which resulted in the peace accord, known as the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) between Khartoum and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM), headed by Tijani-Sissi.

The Gulf state provided hundreds of millions of dollars in funds for development and rehabilitation projects, including the creation of new villages, complete with all basic services, for internally displaced persons who wanted to return to their home areas. Qatar established a US$2 billion bank to fund rehabilitation projects there.

The five new villages are being established at a cost of US$31 million; funding of various short-term development projects under an agreement with the United Nations Development Programme to the tune of US$88 million; and the construction of 10 more villages at a cost of US$70 million.

Experts say the celebrations will enable Khartoum declare Darfur clear of any serious rebellion.

The President of Chad, a strong backer of peace in Darfur, as this would help clear neighbouring villages and areas of any threats of insurgency to Chad, was quoted as saying that he has happily accepted the invitation.
