Sudan: Sudan, UN, AU agree on smooth UNAMID exit from Darfur

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - Sudan, UN and African Union (AU) on Monday in Khartoum
agreed on a smooth and phased exit of the UN/AU Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) from
Sudan's Darfur region.

PANA reports that, the exit of the mission would leave the maintenance of peace
and stability in the region to Sudanese authorities.

Sudanese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ali Sadiq told reporters in Khartoum
that the decision was reached at a meeting of joint task group, comprising Sudan
government, UN and AU officials.

He said the members of the joint group also agreed to undertake a field tour
of Darfur region before reconvening on 8 May.

The spokesperson hoped the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon would
convey in his next report to the UN Security Council on the current
situation, "as regards the prevalence of security, the defeat of the rebels
and an unprecedented stability in Darfur region."

He also noted that, a recent visit to the region by Sudan's President
Omar Al Bashir was an indication of the peace and security in Darfur,
as well as the conduct of the Sudan school certificate examinations
there without any security hitches.
