Sudan: Khartoum welcomes reduction in number of UNAMID personnel
Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - The Sudanese government has welcomed a resolution by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) cutting down the number of military and police personnel of the United Nations/African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) by 44% in the coming six months.
The resolution which brings down the number of the military component of UNAMID to 11,395 and the police component to 2,888 follows UNSC's recognition that Darfur has folded the conflict page and has directed its efforts towards peace, development and reconstruction, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry said in a press release here Saturday.
The Ministry underlined the commitment by the government to continue consultation and coordination with the UN and African Union within the joint task team of UNAMID exit strategy for a smooth phased withdrawal in the coming period.
It also stressed the government's commitment to continue providing all the necessary facilities to help UNAMID complete its mandate.
The Foreign Ministry renewed the call by the government to the rebel movements to shun violence and immediately join, without preconditions, the political process and the efforts to rehabilitate and reconstruct in light of the guarantees provided by the document of the national dialogue conference.
It complimented the efforts being exerted by African Union chief mediator, Thabo Mbeki, and by the joint special representative of the United Nations and African Union.
The ministry commended the call by the UN Security Council to international donors and concerned UN agencies and funds to redouble their efforts in support of the development of Darfur and in addressing the situation of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) and those who voluntarily returned to their homes to resume their normal lives.
