South African dream team lands in Zanzibar

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – A group of South African teenagers who are flying a small aircraft they built has arrived safely in Zanzibar.

As previously reported by PANA, the team embarked on the historic flight from Cape Town to Cairo on 15 June.

They are flying 10,100 km across Namibia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia and Eritrea before ending in Egypt.

Team leader Megan Werner who is just 17 years old and has done much of the flying, said the conditions have been good and they have had no serious problems apart from faulty radio and navigation equipment in Namibia.

Werner said the aim of the initiative is “to show Africa and even the world that anything is possible if you set your mind to it”.

She founded U-Dream Global with 19 other students in an attempt to promote engineering, science, technology, and skills development.

It took the team just two weeks to build the aircraft – a four-seater Sling 4.

They are being accompanied by a support aircraft flown by experienced adult pilots who are in constant radio contact with them and ground crews.

The first flight from Cairo to Cape Town took place 99 years ago.
