South African President Ramaphosa appoints new public protector

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday appointed advocate Kholeka Gcaleka as South Africa's new public protector.

The critical appointment follows the impeachment of the previous public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane in September. An independent panel earlier found that Mkhwebane made repeated errors and called into question her fitness to hold office.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said Ramaphosa appointed Gcaleka on the recommendation of the National Assembly for a non-renewable term of seven years with effect from 1 November 2023.

Gcaleka needed 240 votes (60%) and 244 of MPs voted in support of her appointment.

“The President wishes advocate Gcaleka well in her position and trusts she will serve the people of South Africa with honour and dedication,” Magwenya said.
