South Africa salutes triumphant national football team

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – South Africa’s national football team on Monday received a heroes’ welcome at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport following a triumphant victory over Libya to secure a spot in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt in June.

South Africa registered a hard-fought 2-1 victory against a Libya on Sunday in Sfax, Tunisia on Sunday.

Two goals by Percy Tau secured the win for South Africa who finished unbeaten in six matches. The other countries which have qualified are Angola, Madagascar, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

SA Football Association President Danny Jordaan pointed out that Africa will have nine or ten teams competing at the 2022 World Cup.

“So, it was important to qualify for that reason. We are in there now, so we must work hard to get into the top eight or nine, and then look at qualification for the World Cup, and we have to qualify for that World Cup,” Jordaan said.

He added that 2019 is going to be a very exciting year for South Africa’s national teams with the national women’s team competing in their maiden FIFA World Cup, the U-20 side will compete in the U20 World Cup for the second time in a row and the U-23 side is on the verge of qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games.
