South Africa one step closer to hosting mega sporting event

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – South Africa has been recommended as the preferred host nation for the 2023 Rugby World Cup, ahead of France and Ireland.

The announcement made by rugby’s global governing body received an independent recommendation as to which country should host the 2023 tournament.

South Africa successfully hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup as well as the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

Its 2023 bid team submitted a 827-page, 8-kilogram bid book which included a commitment from the South African government to exceed the minimum guarantee of £120 million required by World Rugby. It stressed that many of the stadiums and facilities built for the football World Cup would be used for the tournament.

The recommendation will now be put to the vote of the World Rugby Council in London on 15 November. All three candidates will appear on the ballot paper but the recommendation of the evaluation committee is expected to be the main consideration.

The 2019 tournament will be hosted by Japan for the first time.

South Africa defeated New Zealand 15–12 in the 1995 World Cup Final which is now remembered for Nelson Mandela’s appearance in the stadium wearing the national team’s shirt. South Africa regained their title as champions 12 years later, when they defeated England 15–6 in the 2007 final in France.
