Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – The South African government on Saturday condemned Israel's "unjust attacks on civilians in Gaza and Jerusalem" and said the atrocities should be investigated and referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC) as possible crimes against humanity.
This week’s clashed have claimed more than 100 lives, mostly Palestinian civilians.
"South Africa also urges Israel to stop all planned evictions of Palestinian families in the Sheikh Jarrar area," said Department of International Relations and Cooperation spokesperson, Clayson Monyela.
He noted that the violence violated UN resolutions, and South Africa supported a call for intervention by the international community and the ICC.
Monyela said the South African government welcomed the fact that Hamas is open to international mediation and to discuss a ceasefire.
Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla, this week urged the government to close Israel's embassy in Pretoria and shut down South Africa’s embassy in Tel Aviv.
