South Africa: SAA suspends flights to Hong Kong

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – South African Airways on Tuesday confirmed that its flights to and from Hong Kong international airport have been cancelled for a second day running as a result of the ongoing pro-democracy protests.

The disruptions caused by the anti-government protests have wreaked havoc in the financial capital.

Hong Kong International Airport which handles about 1,100 flights daily has confirmed that terminal operations have been seriously disrupted, and all check-in processes have been suspended.

South African Airways flights said the decision to suspend flights was taken because “conditions are not conducive for the airport and the airlines to run their operations as per normal”.

“It is not possible to operate passenger flights in or out of Hong Kong as in some cases, terminals have been blocked and access to check in counters is not possible due to demonstrations taking place at the airport,” said airline spokesperson, Tlali Tlali.

He added that SAA is in constant liaison with the authorities in Hong Kong to receive updates and to know when operations could resume.
