South Africa: Preparations underway for Mandela's 100th birthday programme

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – The Nelson Mandela Foundation on Monday launched the Nelson Mandela Centenary programme to mark his 100th birthday which will be marked on 18 July, 2018.

The prisoner-turned-world statesman, who led South Africa to democracy, died peacefully in 2013.

The foundation said it is planning extensive programmes in celebrating what would have been the Nobel Laureate’s 100th birthday.

“We believe that as a society if we apply his humility, tact and penchant for dialogue, we can face the challenges that threaten South Africa. As we reflect on an unforgettable South African moment, let us be sure not to see it in isolation,” the foundation said in a statement.

Over the weekend, South Africa commemorated 27 years since Mandela's release from prison in 1990. More that 10,000 people on Saturday took part in the annual Freedom Run from the Drakenstein Prison outside Cape Town where Mandela finished his 28-year jail term.

The Western Cape government last month set aside US$ 120,000 to erect a statue of Mandela at the Cape Town City Hall where he made his historic address to the world hours after being released.
