South Africa: NPA addresses top goalkeeper's murder

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA)  -  South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority is yet to arrest suspects who killed former Orlando Pirates and national goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa in 2014.

Meyiwa was shot dead during a botched robbery at the home of his girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo, in Vosloorus near Johannesburg.

One suspect was later arrested but was not linked to the crime which shocked South Africa.

This was after the family of the player had approached a private lobby group to help secure a conviction. The group has agreed to assist.

"Of grave concern is the sharing of details of ongoing investigations in the public domain as this practice is likely to jeopardize the prospects of success in investigations that may ultimately lead to the apprehension of the suspects,” the NPA said in a statement received by PANA.

The NPA said it remained committed to delivering justice, adding that, to achieve this objective required thoroughly investigated cases.

Meyiwa, who was born in 1984, was made captain of Orlando Pirates by coach Vladimir Vermezovic in his last four games before his death.

He was also made captain of the national squad by coach Shakes Mashaba in his last four games of 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualification.

As a mark of respect, the Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs due to be played on 1 November 2014, was postponed.

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter called Meyiwa's death a "senseless, tragic loss” while Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas posted a picture on Instagram of Meyiwa holding his Real Madrid jersey after Spain played South Africa in an international friendly.
