South Africa: Africa's tallest building nears completion

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) –  A property development in the upmarket Johannesburg suburb of Sandton has officially become the tallest building in Africa.

The Leonardo is a 234-metre skyscraper within walking distance of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the headquarters of some of Africa’s biggest companies.

The 55 floor mixed-use development, which opens in October, will reach a height of 234 metres, making it 11 metres taller than the current tallest building in Africa which is Johannesburg’s Carlton Centre.

Developed by the Legacy Group and Nedbank, it has five floors of office space as well as shops, restaurants, offices and apartments.

The cherry on top is a three-floor penthouse which is expected to go on the market for about US$12 million which would make it the most expensive sectional title property ever sold in South Africa.

Of Africa’s 10 tallest buildings, four are in Johannesburg, three in Dar es Salaam, two in Nairobi and one in Lagos. Construction of the 314-metre high Pinnacle Tower in Nairobi has stalled.
