Some forty Malian journalists receive training in election coverage

Bamako, Mali (PANA)  - Some 40 Malian journalists Wednesday began a training workshop on election coverage and strategies for preventing and easing socio-political tensions during the pre-election and election period, an official source told PANA.

For three days, these media men will be equipped with techniques for processing and verifying information during this training course organized by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA international), in partnership with Mali's High Authority for Communication (HAC) and the Malian Centre for Inter-Party Dialogue and Democracy (CMDID).

According to CMDID representative Boubacar S. Camara, the media, regarded as the Fourth Estate of power, "can enlighten, calm and combat violence before and during elections, as well as referendum consultations.

"Recalling that Mali is preparing for a referendum consultation on 18 June, Mr Camara felt that the country "needs professional journalists to cover this very important event, which is a bit special because it is different from an election in other words."

The representative of the HAC, Seydou Sissouma, noted that these kinds of sessions should be duplicated in the regions of Mali, recalling that Mali has some 40 television channels, half a thousand radio stations, more than 200 newspapers and more than 50 online news sites.
