Skhirat Agreement is 'single framework' to end Libya's political crisis, says Mediterranean states

Athens, Greece (PANA) - The importance of the political process in Libya through the full implementation of the Skhirat Political Agreement signed in December 2015 in Morocco was highlighted on Thursday in Athens, Greece, by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM).

The Skhirat Agreement remains the single framework for ending the political crisis in Libya, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolutions, underlined the recommendation adopted unanimously on Morocco's proposal at the 14th session of the PAM, held in the Greek capital.

The recommendation also noted that the implementation of this agreement was of great importance for the organisation of the elections and the completion of the political transition operation.

"The Skhirat Agreement, given its flexibility, is likely to take into account the new developments for a return of the parties concerned to the negotiating table with a view to a comprehensive political settlement in Libya," the PAM said.

It also rejected any foreign intervention and condemned the violation of the arms embargo and the recruitment of mercenaries in order to promote the return of the Libyan parties to the negotiating table as part of the political process already engaged with the Skhirat agreement.

The recommendation also stressed the need for peace building in the Mediterranean region, the fight against illegal migration, human trafficking and instability in the Sahel-Saharan region.
