Senior US official visits Khartoum to express support for PM after foiled coup attempt

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA)- U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman arrived in Khartoum on Wednesday and conferred with Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk, reaffirming his country's  support for the civilian-led transition in Sudan.

The visit comes days after a military coup against Hamdouk was foiled.

The Prime Minister told the American envoy that it was imperative for the military and civilians to work together in leading Sudan to elections and to the establishment of a full-fledged civilian government.

Hamdouk said that it was equally important that the international community continues its support for the fragile government in view of the challenges it currently faces.

Feltman, according to a statement from the council of ministers, has underlined that the foiled coup was  seeking to halt the positive development that Sudan has been witnessing and to reverse the clock on the relations between Sudan and the United States as well as the relations with the International Monetary Fund and funding institutions in the West

He said it is important Sudanese civilians  and military in the current hybrid government cooperate as this is vital for the smooth transition and  for the Sudan to stay in its current position within the international system.

Hamdouk briefed the US official on the situation after the coup was foiled and also commended the American unshakable support for his government

Feltman is due to meet other senior government officials during his visit to Khartoum.

Following the attempted coup failure, the United States issued a statement condemning the attempt by rogue military and civilian actors to seize power from Sudan’s Civilian-ed Transitional Government (CLTG).

A State Department press release said the United States continues to support the CLTG in its pursuit of a democratic transition for Sudan.

“We urge the CLTG to hold all those involved accountable through a fair legal process. Anti-democratic actions such as those of September 21 in Khartoum undermine the call of the Sudanese people for freedom and justice and place international support for Sudan, including the bilateral relationship with the United States, at risk. We condemn any external interference that seeks to sow disinformation and undermine the will of Sudan’s people," it said.
