Senegalese president suspends purchase of service vehicles

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) - Senegalese President Macky Sall has suspended with immediate effect, "until further notice", all acquisitions of service vehicles, for the State, para-public structures and national companies, said a statement of the Council of Ministers issued on Wednesday.

President Sall justified this measure by the "lack of rigour in the full implementation of the regulations, resulting in abuses with enormous budgetary and financial consequences for the state",  the statement added.

In this regard, President Sall called on the ministers concerned to hold an inter-ministerial meeting on the issue "without delay".

He also called for "finalising the full census of all administrative vehicles, revising their regulations, proposing a reform scheme for vehicles aged five years and older and examining the allocation of a lump sum payment to the beneficiaries".

As part of the rationalisation of state spending, President Sall on 1 September 2019 restricted the subscription of civil servants to mobile operators, with the suspension of all outgoing calls, use of landlines, water, electricity, administrative vehicles, fuel and the Internet.

He said that in seven years (since 2012, when he came to power) the state had spent 307 billion CFA francs (US$51.34 million) on vehicles, while its telephone bill was 17 billion francs CFA (US$28.43 million) per year.
