Senegalese president Sall, president-elect Faye meet to discuss 'major state issues'

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) – Senegalese President Macky Sall on Thursday received the in-coming President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, with their discussions focusing on the transfer of power.

The Senegalese presidency said in a post on X social media platform that "the two men discussed major state issues and the oath-taking and transfer of power ceremony", the official Senegal Press Agency (APS) reported.

APS said Ousmane Sonko, leader of the dissolved African Patriots of Senegal for Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF), of which Faye is a member, took part in the hearing.

Faye, 44, was declared the winner of Sunday's presidential election with 54.28%, according to provisional official results announced on Wednesday.

Former Prime Minister and candidate of the outgoing government, Amadou Ba, came second with 35.79% of the votes, the National Voting Census Commission said at the Dakar Court of Appeal.

The third of the 19 candidates, Aliou Mamadou Dia of the Unity and Rally Party (PUR), got 2.80% of the votes.

Voter turnout was 61.30%.

The official and final results are expected to be published on Friday by the Constitutional Council, which asked candidates who contested the election wishing to contest the results as declared by the National Votes Census Commission to file appeals with its registry no later than midnight on Thursday, 28 March.

Faye continues to receive messages of congratulations from world leaders with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa being one of the latest to congratulate him.

He said the outcome of the election "bears testimony to the resilient spirit of the Senegalese people who preferred the democratic course of change of government, through voting".

The President applauded the other contestants for displaying maturity in accepting the election outcome.
