Security incidents claim 107 lives in Niger - OCHA report
Niamey, Niger (PANA) – About 107 people were killed, 97 injured and 131 abducted in 206 "security incidents" which occurred in 2018 in Niger, particularly in attacks by armed groups in the regions of Tillabery on the border with Mali and Burkina Faso, in Tahoua at the Malian border and Diffa in the Lake Chad basin, according to the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Altogether, 184 attacks and 22 inter-communal conflicts were recorded in the three regions where the situation ‘’remains volatile,’’ OCHA said on Friday.
Diffa, where the Islamist group Boko Haram operates, was the most affected with 156 security incidents, followed by Tillabery -- target of jihadist groups where 46 attacks were recorded, and Tahoua was targeted by four incidents.
In Diffa, 137 armed attacks targeting civilians and the defence and security forces and 19 inter-communal conflicts were listed in 2018. In Tillabery, violence was characterized by a series of killings, abductions and threats against villagers in attacks perpetrated by armed groups and inter-communal conflicts, as the border strip with Mali is most affected by the jihadist attacks and the inter-communal conflicts, said OCHA.
In 2019, some 2.3 million people, or 10% of the population, were affected by conflicts and needed humanitarian assistance in Niger, in addition to more than 182,000 refugees.
