Secretary General of Arab League calls for immediate ceasefire near Tripoli

Cairo, Egypt (PANA)  - The Secretary General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Abou El-Gheit, Friday called for an immediate ceasefire near the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and a return of the Libyan parties in the UN-backed political process in a bid to reach exclusive and durable solution to the Libyan crisis.

In a communiqué issued here, the Arab League said it was intensifying efforts based on the resolution adopted unanimously by the League’s Council of ministers held on 10 September in a bid to reach immediate ceasefire and resume the political process aimed at the unification of the Libyan government institutions and the completion of other security, political and constitutional demands.

El-Gheit conducted a series of negotiations with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, in that respect, and sent him an official letter in which he called for the adoption of a mechanism for strengthening cooperation between the Arab League and the United Nations.

The communiqué said it was presently carrying out consultations on proposed approaches leading to the establishment of a common mechanism.

Gutarres relayed the request of El-Gheit before the UN Security Council, added the communiqué.
