Sao Tome and Principe: The Court of Auditors to resume its role

Sao Tome, Sao Tome and Principe (PANA) - The Court of Auditors will soon resume the trial of economic crimes, the supervision of mega projects of the State, and ensure the safety of auditors, PANA learned from reliable sources in Sao Tome.

This was announced to the press on Monday in the capital, at the end of the working session on this issue in Parliament, by the President of the Court of Auditors, José António Monte Cristo.

He assured that in the month of August, the legislative reforms will be the subject of debate.

Mr Cristo added: "Members are interested in approving all the reforms so that the Court of Auditors can fulfill its mission in the field of good governance".

The Organic Law on Support Services Procedures and the Status of Auditors are the documents that are being examined and their approval should allow the Court of Auditors to play its full role.

The number of judges at the Court of Auditors will be increased from two to five, one part being devoted to the procedures of prior checking and judgment of cases of financial irregularities.

Once the acts are adopted, between November and next December, this body will resume the proceedings in plenary session.

He assured that the new documents reinforce the prerogatives of the auditors, when they are on mission.

However, since 2009, the Court of Auditors no longer carries out the preliminary inspection and this task has been entrusted to the central financial purchasing office, he added.

The documents in question, he continued, will allow the major projects of the State to obtain the opinion of the Court of Auditors.
