Saied to Macron: Tunisia will not be military base for any party

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - Tunisian President Kaïs Saied Friday said his country was not considering serving as a military base for any party, an official statement issued here said.

In an interview on phone with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, Saied reaffirmed his rejection of any partition of Libya, adding that Tunisia insisted on its sovereignty as well as that of Libya.

He declared that Tunisia sided with Libya, one of the countries most affected by the fighting and division of this neighboring country.

The statement issued by the Tunisian presidency highlighted the constant position of the Tunisian president, pleading for a Libyan-Libyan solution to the conflict between the government of national accord (GNA) chaired by Fayez Al Sarraj, recognized by the international community, and the self-proclaimed commander of the “Libyan army”, Khalifa Haftar.

According to the statement, the talks focused on the “exceptional relations between Tunisia and France, as well as the opening of new horizons to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries”.

The French president indicated the availability of his country to provide aid to Tunisia, added the statement.

President Saied insisted on the fact that the whole world had entered a new historic phase that required the resort to innovative ideas, notions and mechanisms.

The two presidents once again agreed to share working visits of friendship after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.
