Rwandan foreign minister Mushikiwabo elected secretary-general of la Francophonie

Erevan, Armenia (PANA) - Rwanda's Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo is the new secretary-general of Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIC), a group of French-speaking countries, the organisation said on Friday.

She beat the incumbent, Canadian Michaëlle Jean, who was seeking a second term. The election was held at the XVII summit of the OIC being held in Armenia.

"LMushikiwabo is the new Secretary General of #Francophonie, elected by the Heads of State and Government meeting @ SummitEVN18," according to a tweet by OIC.

Her candidacy was backed by France and the Africa Union.
