Rwanda court orders rearrest of media boss accused of assaulting female employee

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - A week after he was released on bail, one of the senior managers of a media house in Rwanda, Dr Francis Habumugisha, was rearrested on Tuesday under the order of the primary Court of Nyarugenge, in Kigali City, a judicial source told PANA.

Dr Habumugisha, charged recently for intentionally assaulting his female employee, was released last week before the prosecution lodged an appeal against the initial court's decision

Reports say the initial release was decided by the court on an undisclosed bail condition until the end of the proceedings against the media manager who is currently detained at a police station in Kigali city.

During the initial trial, the prosecution asked for the preventive detention of 30 days against the defendant.

According to the verdict, the incident took place on September 6 when Dr Habumugisha assaulted one of her female employee resulting in moderate bodily injury and disorderly conduct.

Prosecution argued that the media manager and owner of Goodrich, a private TV station based in Kigali, jumped on the female employee and attacked her when she tried to walk out of the back door during an argument at a recent editorial meeting.

The media owner was arrested after a video posted on various social media platforms showed him assaulting the young lady during a meeting at the premises of the TV station in Kigali.
