Riyadh, Tunis reject US recognition of Israeli sovereignty on Golan plateau

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) – Saudi Arabia and Tunisia on Friday slammed the decision made by US president Donald Trump, recognizing Israeli sovereignty on the Golan plateau.

Speaking at the opening session of the council of foreign affairs ministers of the League of Arab States, the head of the Saudi diplomacy, Ibrahim Youssef, said that his country ‘’rejects categorically’’ the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as capital of Israel in violation of the UN resolutions.

According to him, the initiatives taken by the US administration will have ‘’serious consequences on the security and stability in the region’’.

Youssef, the outgoing chairman of the council, however, denounced ‘’the Iranian interference in the affairs of the Arab countries", through the launching, by the Houthis militias in Yemen, supported by Tehran, of missiles into Saudi territory, including the holy City of Mecca.

Speaking on the issue, the Tunisian minister of foreign affairs, Khemais Jhinaoui, also expressed his country’s rejection of the decision of the US president.

‘’It is a null and void decision that has no legal basis. We will work to counter all consequences that could result from this situation’’, he said.

Describing the US decisions as ‘’disappointing’’, the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Abu Ghaïth, said the US position is aimed at encouraging the occupation of territories by force and favours extremism’’.

The summit’s spokesperson, Mahmoud Khemiri, had said the previous day that a draft resolution will be submitted on that issue to Sunday’s summit.

The speakers pledged their support to the fight of the Palestinian people for the restoration of their rights on the establishment of an independent State with Al Qods (Jerusalem) as capital, and this within the framework of solution for the creation of two States, Palestinian and Israeli.

The council of foreign affairs ministers of the League of Arab States will prepare the agenda of the Arab summit due for Sunday and the draft resolutions that will be submitted.
