Ramaphosa convenes extraordinary SADC Troika, Mozambique Summit

Pretoria, South Africa (PANA) - South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday chaired the Extraordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ Troika plus Mozambique, in Pretoria.

Ramaphosa is the chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.,

A statement from the presidency and the South African Department of International Relations said the summit would obtain a progress report on SADC Mission operations in Mozambique since its deployment.

The Summit will also discuss terrorism and violent extremism in the northern Cabo Delgado province when the deployment ends on 15 October.

Ramaphosa is hosting Botswana President and outgoing chairperson of the SADC Organ Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, Namibian President, and incoming chairperson of the SADC Organ Hage Geingob and Mozambique President and outgoing chairperson of SADC Filipe Nyusi.

A press release issued by the SADC secretariat in Gaborone, Botswana, said the  Summit would, among the key issues, discuss the support for effective operation of the  SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM), whose objective is to bring peace and stability in Cabo Delgado province.

In accordance with Article 10 of the SADC Treaty, the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security is responsible for promoting peace and security in the SADC region.
