Rabat reaffirms its support for Libya and rejects any foreign intervention

Rabat, Morocco (PANA) - The "outcome of the crisis in Libya is the organisation of elections", said Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, affirming that "without these elections, it is impossible to establish legality in Libya.

Speaking at a joint press conference with the UN Special Representative in Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, in Rabat, the Moroccan minister said that "difficulties exist in the search for solutions in Libya," without explaining the nature of these difficulties.

Bathily's visit to Morocco comes within the framework of the permanent dialogue between the UN and Morocco on the follow-up of the situation in Libya, Moroccan government sources said.

Morocco has hosted several meetings between the various parties in conflict in Libya, culminating in agreements that should pave the way for the organization of elections, they said.

In his speech to the press, Bourita said that "Morocco supports the national unity and sovereignty of Libya and a solution within the framework of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"Morocco is in favour of a solution without wanting to impose military outcomes," the Moroccan Foreign Minister insisted, indicating that Morocco, while being in favour of a solution, "is opposed to any foreign intervention and any attempt to make Libya a space for diplomatic rivalries.

"The solution to the crisis can only be found with the help of the international community through the United Nations," he said.

"Morocco distinguishes between two equations, that of legality, which requires the organization of elections to allow political initiatives in Libya, and the second which consists in initiating the transitional period which must be carried out in a consensual manner through institutions that prepare the elections.

"Morocco has always dealt with these institutions to launch the transitional period, both with the government of national unity and with the Parliament and the Council of State," he added.

Bathily said that "Morocco has expressed the same concerns as those of the UN Secretary General regarding Lbye", saying that "we must contribute to the restoration of security and stability in Lbye".

"The role of all neighbouring countries must be to seek a solution to the crisis for the benefit of Libyans who want stable and legal institutions, institutions that can pave the way to prosperity in the country," Bathily added.

"Libya is endowed with significant resources that will enable it in the near future to create the conditions for the prosperity of Libyans," he said, noting that "Libyans are making great efforts, at all levels, to reach a solution to the crisis in the country".
