Presidential Council of Libya welcomes Arab League position supporting legitimacy

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Libya's Vice President of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord (GNA),  Ahmed Omar Maitig, has aid that the Council welcomed the position of the Arab League in support of legitimacy and full implementation of the Skhirat Agreement as the only reference for settlement in Libya.


The Libyan Political Agreement, signed in December 2017 in Skhirat, Morocco. under the aegis of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), is based on a principle of power sharing within the GNA as well as the formation of a High Council of State, an advisory body alongside the maintenance of the Parliament in Tobrouk  in the east of the country.


The Presidential Council position was expressed at a meeting in the Prime Minister's Office on Wednesday by Presidential Council Vice President Ahmed Omar Maitig with Foreign Minister Mohamed Tahar Siala, said a press statement from  the media office of the Presidential Council.


The Arab League, at the end of the extraordinary meeting of the Council on Tuesday at the level of permanent delegates, reaffirmed the legitimacy of the Libyan Political Agreement of Skhirat, and the need to consider it as the only reference for the settlement in Libya.

 

It underlined the importance of a political solution to the Libyan crisis while adhering to the unity and sovereignty of the country, and rejecting any external interference.

 

The same source added that Mr. Siala informed Mr. Maitig "of the latest developments of the League of Arab States meeting at the level of permanent delegates in extraordinary session, which was held on Tuesday at the headquarters of the General Secretariat in Cairo, Egypt.


Mr. Siala said that he had contacted the Foreign Ministers of the countries of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA-Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Algeria) and of the Arab countries concerning "the fact of not treating with illegal bodies which do not arise from the Skhirat Agreement."


Libya's delegate to the Arab League, Saleh al-Chammakhi, denounced the policy of double standards, two measures of the Arab League in the Libyan file during the extraordinary meeting on Tuesday in Cairo,  convened at the request of Egypt.
