President Sall in Niger for ECOWAS summit

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) – Senegalese president, Macky Sall, leaves Dakar on Sunday for the Nigerien capital, Niamey, to take part in the 57th summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), an official communiqué issued in Dakar said.

The summit will be devoted, among other issues, to the political situation in Mali, marked by the coup of 18 August which overthrew the regime of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.

ECOWAS, which suspended Mali from the regional organisation, demands that the ruling military introduces a transitional period of one year which should lead to elections aiming to hand power back to civilians.

During their meeting, the ECOWAS heads of State will also discuss the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and its socioeconomic effects on the region.

Set up in 1975, ECOWAS brings together 15 countries - Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Cabo Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.
