President Magufuli pledges to drive Tanzania to middle income status

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (PANA) – Tanzanian President John Magufuli has said his government is determined to register impressive achievements in 2019, in line with the country’s Five-Year Development Plan (2016/17 – 2021), with the target of driving Tanzania to a middle income status.

President Magufuli reiterated the commitment at a New Year sherry party he hosted on Friday night at the State House in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam for members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Tanzania.

He explained that his government would put emphasis on agriculture, tourism, air transport and mining, to achieve its goals.

The president said it was the government’s goal to continue implementing development projects and plans which, according to him, have so far registered great success.

He mentioned huge infrastructural projects which commenced in the past year as the building of the standard gauge railway (SGR) from Dar es Salaam to the political capital Dodoma,  a major hydropower project at Stiegler’s Gorge in the Rufiji River Basin, rural electrification and expansion of ports and airports. Tanzania has also made great strides in health and education, he added.

In his address at the annual ceremony to welcome the New Year, the president also asked the heads of diplomatic missions and international organisations to showcase the various business opportunities available in Tanzania.

A statement issued on Saturday by the State House Director of Presidential Communications, Gerson Msigwa, said President Magufuli also pledged to cement the country’s relations with the diplomatic community in various sectors of development and social welfare.

According to the statement, the president assured the members of the diplomatic corps that Tanzania would continue to maintain peace and security, keeping the economy stable and attracting investment.
