President Barrow registers new party in Gambia

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) – The Gambian President Adama Barrow on Tuesday registered a new political party of his own, the National People’s Party (NPP), the country’s electoral office has confirmed.

A press release from Gambia’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said the new party, having met the relevant requirements, was duly registered on December 31 as a bona fide political party with Adama Barrow as its interim secretary general and party leader.

According to sources, the NPP will be formally launched in January 2020. This has put to rest a wave of rumour and speculations that Barrow is in the process of coming up with a new party.

The new party has a symbol of a white horse with peace, progress and unity as its motto.

President Barrow came to political limelight in December 2016 when he defeated long time dictator, Yahya Jammeh, in a presidential election with a combined support of all but one opposition party in the Gambia that rallied against Jammeh.
