PANA Board chairman to participate in UNSMIL roundtable on the role of journalism in Libya's political process
Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is organising a panel discussion on "The role of journalism in the political process", which will be moderated by a group of Libyan journalists, including the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Pan-African News Agency (PANA), Ibrahim al-Majbri.
Scheduled online on Thursday, 18 September, the event will also look at how the Libyan media can contribute to public education and mobilization, reducing conflict and polarisation, as well as promoting national unity, according to a statement released on Monday by UNSMIL on its official Facebook page.
These questions, among others, will be addressed during this round table which is part of the "Basira" programme, dedicated to the development of skills of media professionals in Libya, the statement said.
The guests of the panel are: Ibrahim Hadiya al-Majbari, a Libyan journalist and academic who has worked as a correspondent for several international agencies and News Editor for several Libyan media.
He is also chairman of the Board of Directors of the Pan-African Press Agency (PANA) and Director General of the Libyan Press Agency (LANA).
Mahmoud Shammam, a Libyan journalist and political writer, founder and president of the media group “Al-Wasat” is another panellist. He was previously Editor of the Arabic version of the magazine "Foreign Policy".
He was also a member of the Board of Directors of "Al Jazeera Network", Editor-in-chief of "Newsweek Arabia" and member of the advisory council for the Middle East of the "Carnegie Endowment" for 12 years.
He was responsible for press relations within the executive office of the former National Transitional Council in Libya, an executive body that led Libya during and after the fall of the old regime during the revolution of 17 February 2011.
Zainab Yarab, an award-winning television producer and presenter with over 12 years of diverse experience in print, radio and TV is also on the panel. She currently leads the initiative "Towards a solution" and hosts the podcast "With Zainab", which opens spaces for objective and constructive dialogue. It seeks to establish a culture of compromise and consensus and to promote a global national discourse.
