One killed, another wounded by a wandering elephant in northeastern Benin

Cotonou, Benin (PANA) - A woman was killed and a young herder wounded by a raving elephant in the commune of Banikoara (Northeast), the public service daily "La Nation" announced on Friday.

In this locality, one of the two elephants that have been wondering for a few days last Wednesday attacked two people wounding a 13-year-old herdsman who was grazing his animals and killed a woman of about 45 years old who was fetching firewood.

The young herdsman was rushed to the local health center, where he was receiving medical care and his prognosis is not expected to be life-threatening, reassures the daily newspaper.  

In Benin, the elephant is a fully protected specie and critically in danger of extinction.
