One killed, 3 wounded in new bombardment of Tripoli residential districts

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – At least one person was killed and three others wounded on Tuesday in a new bombardment of residential districts in Guarchesh and Abou Slim, southern Tripoli, as military escalation continued even as the country is mobilized to counter the spread of the coronavirus epidemic, after recording eight cases of confirmed infections.

A shell fell on Tuesday on the zone of Garguaresh, residential district of Tripoli, hitting a house and causing the death of a citizen, Ramadan Gabbaj, and wounding his brother, according to the Health ministry of the Government of National Accord.

As for the municipal council of Abou Slim, it announced on Tuesday that two persons were wounded after rockets hit houses in Abu Slim, Al-Harati.

In a publication, the municipal council said that the wounded were evacuated to be treated in the trauma hospital of Abou Slim.

The ministry stressed bemoaned the huge losses of private and public goods because of the explosion of a shell on cars and direct damage received by the domiciles of peaceful families in their homes".

The municipal council of Abou Slim accused the forces of the Libyan National Army, commanded by Marshall Khalifa Haftar, of perpetrating the attacks.

Armed clashes have intensified over the past few days in the capital Tripoli and its southern zones with the continuation of bombings attributed to Haftar’s forces.

Fierce fighting is raging between the warring parties despite the many local and international appeals to observe humanitarian truce and focus on the fight against the spread of the Covid-19.

The concern of the world leaders with the coronavirus pandemic gave the opportunity to Haftar’s troops to carry out attacks, said observers who added that the Government of National Accord (GNA) responded by a military operation called "Storm of peace" in order to target the sources of shell fires against civilians in Tripoli.

This situation gave rise to a generalized inflammation on all war fronts as the country is facing new infection cases to coronavirus which so far have reached eight.

But in the context of the clashes, the risks of large contamination to the virus is not excluded, according to medical experts who highlighted the failures of the country’s health system despite the prevention measures taken all over the country.

With more than 152,000 displaced persons living in shelters and precarious houses, according to the United-Nations, the bombardments will increase that situation of precariousness for that category of Libyan citizens and will expose them further to the epidemic.
