OIF calls for removal of 2016 EU sanctions against Burundi

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) -  The International Organisation of the Francophone (Organisation internationale de la Francophonie) or OIF has called for the   lifting of sanctions against Burundi  "in accordance with procedures" that entail a series of actions for a specific result, said an official statement obtained Thursday by PANA in Kigali.

OIF Secretary General, Ms. Louise Mushikiwabo said that the resolution was adopted on Wednesday  during a Permanent Council of OIF meeting, which is made up of permanent representatives of heads of State and government of member countries.

In October 2015, the European Union (EU)  froze assets and imposed travel bans on four officials close to late President Pierre  Nkurunziza, accusing them of using excessive force during clashes in the run-up to his re-election.
