No military solution to Libyan crisis, says Congolese President Nguesso

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso, who heads the African Union (AU) High Level Committee on Libya, has reiterated his position on the Libyan crisis, stating that there can be no military solution and called for the resumption of the political process in the troubled North African country.

During a meeting on Thursday in Brazzaville, on the sidelines of the 8th meeting of the African Union (AU) High Level Committee on Libya, with the President of the Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez al-Sarraj, President Nguesso stressed that "there is no military solution to the Libyan crisis and there is the need to return to the path of a political solution".

According to a statement issued on Friday by the media office of the Libyan Presidential Council, he expressed his country's "rejection and condemnation of the targeting of civilians", referring to the bombing of civilian facilities by Marshal Haftar's forces of the Libyan National Army (LNA), the latest of which is the random firing of missiles that killed four children in the Hadhba area, southeast of Tripoli.

President Nguesso and Mr. al-Sarraj agreed on "the importance for the African Union playing a central role in finding a solution to the Libyan crisis".

The meeting between Mr. al-Sarraj, and President Nguesso focused on developments in Libya and bilateral relations between the two countries.

Mr. al-Sarraj expressed his gratitude for the efforts of the African Union High Level Committee which held its eighth meeting on Thursday morning, with the aim of reaching a solution to the Libyan crisis, according to a statement posted on the GNA's website.

Speaking at the African Union High Level Committee on Libya, Mr. al-Sarraj accused "regional and international parties of obstructing the political path and pushing the country into the current state of war".

He announced his intention "to bring legal action against all those who have contributed to harming the Libyan people and demanding fair compensation for the families of the victims".

He also proposed the appointment of an African Union Special Envoy to Libya, expressing the hope that the proposal would attract the support of all AU members.

Algeria has proposed to host a National Reconciliation Conference in Libya as part of the mediation initiative launched by Algerian President Abdelmajid Tabboune on the sidelines of the Berlin International Conference on Libya.
