No designated laureate for the 2019 Mo Ibrahim Prize for excellence leadership in Africa

Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (PANA) – The independent committee of the Mo Ibrahim Prize for excellence leadership in Africa has not designated any laureate for the 2019 edition, PANA learned from a communique issued on Thursday at the end of its deliberations.

According to the chairman of the Prize’s committee, former Botswana president Festus Mogae, no candidate met the awarding criteria for the prize which rewards a personality whose exceptional governance brought peace, stability and prosperity in his country.  

As for the president of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, Dr Mo Ibrahim, he expressed his optimism to set up a Prize for the personality who meets the criteria defined with regard to the progress made in Africa in terms of good governance over the last ten years.

The prize was established in 2007 by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. Winner pockets US$ 5 million dollars and an annual life premium of US$ 200,000 if the winner initiates a charity work.
