Nigeria Britain confirms killing of its national, one Nigerian in attack in a resort in Kaduna, Northwest Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria (PANA)   -   The British High Commission in Abuja on Sunday confirmed that a British national, Faye Mooney, was among victims of the attack by unknown gunmen on Kajuru Castle in Kaduna last Friday.

The British said the gunmen also killed a staff of an international Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Safety Organisation, Mathew Oguche.

The British High Commission also said that the gunmen abducted three others.

Kaduna and other parts of Northwest Nigeria have in recent months been targets of increasing killings and kidnappings by armed bandits.

The efforts to curtail their activities have not yielded the required impact as they have made parts of Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto and Kaduna scenes of recurring violence and kidnappings.

The British national, Mooney, worked with a non-governmental organisation, Mercy Corps.

The victims had reportedly travelled from Lagos to the resort when they were attacked around midnight.

The British High Commission in a statement by the Head of Communications, Policy & Corporate Lead, Department for International Development, Mr David Smith, on Sunday disclosed that the deceased’s next-of-kin had been notified.

The Commission stated that it was offering consular assistance to her family while also engaging with the Nigerian authorities on the incident.

The statement reads: “The British High Commission is aware of an incident involving the death of a British national and a Nigerian national in Kaduna State, late on Friday evening. Mooney was killed on Friday, 19 April 2019 in an attack at Kajuru Castle, near Kaduna, alongside a Nigerian national,  Oguche.

“Mooney was employed in Nigeria with the NGO Mercy Corps. Oguche worked for the International NGO Safety Organisation. Her next-of-kin has been notified and we are offering consular assistance to her family. We are engaging with the Nigerian authorities, and we understand an investigation is underway.”
