Niger to raise women's quota for elected and nominated positions

Niamey, Niger (PANA) - The Nigerien government approved a bill on Friday to increase women's quotas in senior positions of state.

The quotas go up from 15% to 25% for elected functions and from 25% to 30% for nominated functions.

This bill will be sent to the National Assembly for adoption.

"Niger, like other nations around the world, is committed to making women a full participant in the process of socio-economic and political development. It is with this in mind that the law of June 7, 2000 was adopted before being amended by the law of November 5, 2014 which revises upward the rate of elected office from 10% to 15%," the government said in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting of the Council of Ministers.

According to the government, "given the importance of women's place in society and their digital weight, it is necessary that they be more empowered and better represented in the decision-making bodies that engage the life of the nation".
