Niger ratifies African Charter on Governance and Local Development

Niamey, Niger (PANA) - The Nigerien government has ratified the African Charter on the Values and Principles of Decentralization, Local Governance and Local Development in Africa, which aims to "promote, protect and stimulate decentralization, local governance and local development on the continent," said an official statement.

The charter aims to promote the participation of civil society, the private sector and the population in decentralization, local governance, and local development initiatives.

It is built around values such as community participation and inclusiveness, respect for human and peoples' rights, justice, equality and equity, the transfer to local governments and local authorities of the power to manage their administrations and finances in an accountable and transparent manner.

The African Charter on the Values and Principles of Decentralization, Local Governance and Local Development in Africa was adopted on 27 June 2014 by the 23rd Ordinary Session of the Conference held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
