Niger extends the state of emergency in the department of Filingué

Niamey, Niger (PANA) - The Nigerien government Saturday extended the state of emergency in the department of Filingué in the region of Tillabéry, following terrorist attacks, a statement issued by the Council of ministers said.

The state of emergency in this particular situation gives the administrative authorities and the defense and security forces deployed in the area the legal powers to protect the population and guarantee the integrity of Nigerien territory in the face of terrorism.

The extension for a further period of three months from August 08, was decided due to the persistence of terrorist acts in the region.

Several other departments in this region are subject to this situation.

The Tillabéry region was in fact the scene of one of the deadliest terrorist attacks carried out in Niger, notably the attack on the Inatès camp, which killed more than 70 Nigerien soldiers in late 2019.
